The Hellenic Center for Marine Research (HCMR), in collaboration with Cabrito Consulting, has announced the signing of a memorandum of cooperation for the development of the manned underwater research station “Calamar Park” in Greece.
“Calamar Park” will serve as a submarine station off the Greek coast, catering to research, educational, and commercial purposes. Located near the island of Rhodes, the installation will accommodate a team of up to eight individuals and will be named the “European Submarine Research Station.”
Cabrito Consulting and HCMR plan two versions of the station: a self-propelled station for changing positions and functions, as well as a semi-mobile station for travel to various destinations.
“Calamar Park” aims to position Rhodes as a hub for the development of technologies for extended stays underwater, serving fields such as archaeology, ecology, education, culture, and tourism.
This collaboration opens new prospects for research initiatives in Greek waters, encouraging participation from all Euro-Mediterranean countries and beyond. It is expected to contribute to the growth of the scientific, educational, and tourism sectors in the region.
