Lake Stefaniada is the result of a landslide that blocked a stream in 1964. It is the newest natural lake in the Balkans and is located 72 km from Karditsa. This lake dive is aimed at experienced divers mainly due to the low temperature and even lower visibility. This particular lake is located at an altitude of 750 meters so we are talking about altitude diving, a factor which must be taken into consideration when planning the dive.

The road to the lake is difficult and for the most part is a dirt road. Park your car and carry your equipment as close to the shore as possible.

THE COAST

The area around the lake is quite beautiful and wild, suitable for exploration and hiking.

ENTRY TO THE SEA

As we could not find a smooth entry point, we tied a rope to a tree to help us reach the water. The slope is a bit steeper than usual and since we were carrying heavy equipment we considered having the extra safety of the rope a good idea.

THE DIVE

After performing all your checks, dive in and follow any coastal course you wish. There is no relief or specific place to visit. The light disappears quickly due to the cloudy waters making it difficult to go below 8 meters. The route we followed compensated us, as we dived among trees. We met crabs and a few small pond fish. The temperature, we dived in winter, was at 8 degrees Celsius, so our diving was limited to 30 minutes while wearing our drysuits.
