NISOS PROTI - SHIPWRECK

Home 9 Βουτιά 9 NISOS PROTI – SHIPWRECK

The shipwreck of the small freighter from the era of World War II is rightfully the diving landmark of the area, although not the only one. While opinions differ regarding its exact identity (locals identify it with the “Anouar,” a min-caique-type freighter, while there is an opinion that associates it with the small motorship “Maria K.,” which sank during an Italian Air Force bombardment in 1941), it has been a popular diving destination for years and the place where the majority of local diving school students complete their Open Water training.

It has a shipwreck

The small Vourlia beach, the only beach on the island, is protected from the weather at the depth of a cove, ideal for anchoring small boats and sailboats. The nearest harbor is the small port of Marathos (or Marathopoli), just across from the island and only 1.5 km away. If you have your own boat, approach with caution, as the stern of the wreck almost protrudes from the water.

THE COAST

Vourlia beach does not have any facilities, like the entire uninhabited island (except for the nearby monastery of Gorgopigis above the beach, which opens a few times a year, and some occasional shepherds). However, visitors who do not dive can enjoy sunbathing, swimming, or snorkeling above the wreck.

ENTRY TO THE SEA

You can enter the sea either by setting up your equipment on the shore and swimming on the surface to the wreck or directly from your boat.

THE DIVE

The wreck is at a very shallow depth (-5 m), and a short distance from the shore, sitting on its left side and facing East-West. Its stern, with the propeller still in place, almost protrudes from the sea surface. After circling around the metal hull, you can continue in a south-southwesterly direction, with the rocky shores of the island on your right, forming a beautiful underwater wall, depending on the air supply and your stamina.
