Marine Mammal Bio-Monitoring Training Program

Nature and the environment are integral parts of our lives, and the need to protect them is more urgent than ever. The University of Thessaly, recognizing this need, offers a unique educational program for the bio-monitoring of marine mammals at sea.

What is the program?

The program titled “Marine Mammal Bio-Monitoring at Sea” is a comprehensive 3-day training course that combines theoretical knowledge and practical experience in marine biology. Its goal is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge needed to monitor and record marine mammals in their natural habitat.

Who is it for?

The program is aimed at graduates of biological and agricultural sciences, as well as anyone interested in deepening their understanding of marine mammal ecology. If you have a passion for the sea and its protection, this program is for you!

Structure and Content

The program is structured over three days:

Day 1 – Theoretical Foundation:

  • Biodiversity and ecology of marine mammals.
  • Environmental pressures and conservation of marine mammals.

Day 2 – Practical Training at Sea:

  • Navigation and use of scientific tools in the marine area of the Pagasetic Gulf.

Day 3 – Practical Base:

  • Photo-identification and acoustic monitoring of cetaceans.
  • Solving case studies.

Location

The theoretical training takes place at the School of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Thessaly in Volos, while the practical training is conducted at the main port of Volos and the Pagasetic Gulf.

Cost and Certification

The cost of participation in the program is 200 euros. Upon successful completion of the program, participants receive a Certificate of Attendance from the Center for Lifelong Learning of the University of Thessaly. Additionally, the program awards 2 ECTS credits.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the program, you must submit an application and pass an evaluation process based on:

  • The order of application submission (60%)
  • Research capability as evidenced by your resume (40%)

The program is coordinated by esteemed scientists from the University of Thessaly, led by Associate Professor Georgios A. Gkafas and Professor Athanasios Exadaktylos.
