The mask is your window to the underwater world, so choose the one that suits you best! The options are many and at the same price range.
TRY IT ON
It is important to try on the mask before you buy it to make sure that it fits you, it would be even better if you were able to try it on a dive first. Place the mask on your face, without wearing the straps and breathe in through your nose, without holding it with your hands. If the mask sticks to your face and it is not too tight, it means that it fits well and no water will enter.
MASK TYPES AND MYOPIA
Dive masks can be divided into two different groups. The so called panoramic masks that have a single lens and those that have two separate lenses and are divided in the middle. Single lens masks offer you field of vision, but if you can, do a “test drive” with both types to find out which one you like best.
If you have myopia, you have two options. Dive with contact lenses or have your mask outfitted as a prescription mask. There are specific mask models on the market with lenses that can be customized according to your prescription. You could always customize your mask in an optician’s shop, but in this case it will cost you more.
SILICONE
One small detail you can consider is the color of the silicone. If it is transparent you will have a better view of the surrounding area and in addition if a diver approaches you from one side you will be able to see a shadow from that side. Its disadvantage, unlike black silicone, is that your face can be reflected in the mask, something that can be annoying especially if you are photographing. For divers who have a mustache or a beard, a mask with a longer length of silicone usually helps to prevent possible leaks.
Prices usually range from 40 euro for basic models up to 150 euro. You could settle for a simpler mask in the beginning and buy a more advanced one at a later time, when you will have better knowledge of what you might need.
